Yes, Racing Trucks Up Ski Slopes Is as Insane as You’d Think

Red Bull is all about extreme sports. Whether it’s Formula One or racing airplanes, the company loves to sponsor the sort of events that outdoorsy, adrenaline-addled millennials might enjoy. That’s why the company has an event called the Red Bull Frozen Rush.

It’s one part NASCAR and another part snowmobile racing—900 horsepower off-road trucks racing up the slopes at Maine’s Sunday River ski area. It’s also pretty simple: Drivers race side-by-side, in single elimination sprints around a hilly .75-mile course with very, very little traction. To make it feasible, the 900-horsepower Pro-4 off-road trucks are equipped with specially made BFGoodrich MudTerrain tires with more than 700 studs each. Even those aren’t always enough—especially since the trucks can hit 100 mph going downhill—and the lack of grip is evident in the highlight reel above, where trucks launch themselves sideways into the course boundaries or nearly into their competitors.

For the second year of the race, Red Bull brought together some big names from the off-road racing community, including winners of the legendary Baja 1000 race. The Frozen Rush is just a one-off race for fun, so it doesn’t count towards any series. The quarterfinals run just two laps, while the semifinal and finals run for four and six laps respectively. Though the race took place last week, highlights will air on NBC on March 1 at 2PM EST. Just late enough to make you nostalgic for winter weather. Or, watch some highlights right now.
