Anders Larson, founder and trombonist of jazz group Elektrojazz, has a passion for cars from the 1970s. But Landers makes his living playing jazz and he’s settled in Denmark, and he can’t afford the massive taxes he’d have to pay to import an old-school beauty. Instead, he drives a 1999 Citroen Saxo VTS (equipped with a definitely necessary rear spoiler), after (kind of) upgrading from his 1987 Toyota Supra.
Since Larson can’t have the classic rides he loves, he wrote Cars, a jazz album about them. Lots of music is about unrequited love for humans, so why not something for autos? In any case, there are definitely more unusual ways to express feelings for automobiles.
The 15 tracks on Cars are each written to match the feel and personality of a particular car. “911T Cruise Blues is a fast, energetic song while the ambient ballad L’Esprit is supposed to set the stage for Bond driving his submarine Lotus underwater,” Larson says.
“Lambo Mambo,” for the Lamborghini Countach, starts slow to match the time it takes to ungracefully cram yourself into the car, then “folds out as a fast Latin tune.” The Ferrari 308 gets a “tight and funky” song. The Saab 99 Turbo is matched with “the only real jazz tune on the album” that “sets up trench coat-colored scenery, perfect for a private detective driving around in a mid-sized Swedish town.”
